ENEOS on the Road: McCully Union Service in Honolulu
The ENEOS on the Road series recently took us to Oahu, Hawaii, where we visited several ENEOS dealers and got a firsthand look at the island’s vibrant automotive culture. Among our stops was McCully Union Service in Honolulu, a family-owned shop with deep roots in the community.
Shop owner Charles shared the story of a business started by his in-laws, the late Gil Au and his wife, Grace Au. Originally located in Nuuanu Valley, the shop eventually moved to its current Honolulu location, where it has operated for nearly 20 years.
Today, McCully Union Service is a second-generation family business working toward becoming a third-generation operation, with family members involved in the shop.
One important part of the shop’s business is Hawaii’s vehicle safety inspection program. Unlike a smog inspection alone, Hawaii’s required safety check examines essential components such as lights, horns, windshield wipers, and other systems needed to keep vehicles safe and legal on the road.
Charles came to the automotive industry without a traditional automotive background. After studying sociology, he began helping his future wife’s family at the shop and discovered a passion for the work. Decades later, that passion continues through the family business.
McCully Union Service works on a wide range of vehicles, with a strong focus on Toyota, Lexus, and Honda. ENEOS 0W-20 full-synthetic motor oil is a frequent choice, while 0W-16 and 0W-8 are becoming increasingly important as newer vehicles call for lower-viscosity oils. Our visit highlighted not only the enduring family tradition behind McCully Union Service, but also the generations of automotive knowledge and enthusiasm that help make Hawaii’s car culture so unique.
